Laugavegur hike in Iceland, one of the best hikes in the world!

I have hiked in many corners of the world but this one at only 2 hours flight from home was really the best in my life. From coloured mountains, to valleys in all tones of green to amazing waterfalls to walking on ice.... the Laugavegur trail has it all!

First day immediately blew me away! Only 3 hours flight from home and such a magical country! Backpack was much heavier than I am used to. Never have been hiking with a tent on my own. Normally I go to super hot places but this time I expected cold and rainy weather as well so needed much more warm gear. Sooooo lucky again because these days I only had full sunshine weather! The coloured mountains looked amazing! Very happy I managed to find the mountain with the river that I saw on a photo in Holland with my drone. That image made me decide to choose Iceland in the first place. And that I got the drone back in one piece after flying 😇. I even managed to get the tent up and prepare my first ever 'diner' with a gas stove. Think I am officially now a camper 😅🥳.

At the second day left one of the first at the campsite after some tasty salami wraps for breakfast. Although it is not super busy at the trail, great feeling to be alone in the mountains. Again breathtaking views. Today soo many different colors of green! One watercrossing where I changed shoes. Arrived already at 1230 at the next campsite and in doubt whether to continue or not but go with the flow, all the time of the world, no race so decided to get rid of my heavy backpack and enjoy this amazing campsite at the lake. Best spot close to the stream, my waterscource for tea and diner, pure springwater! Now ready for the 3rd, about to pack my things again. Still nice weather, not as blue as other days but still great for hiking! Cant wait what today has to offer!

Arrived at the end of the Laugavegur trail today. Seriously no need to fly all the way to Patagonia, this trail had so much more variety! Hiked through white snow, black lava fields, green moss hills, the coloured mountains were breathtaking as well as the steam that came out from nowhere. 100% magic! And 4 days of blue sky! Passed quite some memorial stonehills of people who died in a blissard or other bad weather during the trail. Or got lost in the heavy mist so was really lucky with the weather. Loved to set up my own tent, so much more privacy than sleeping in the hut! Great gift btw from https://www.travel4professionals.nl!!

I admit that the heavy backpack slowed me down a lot, every day did the approx 15km in about 4 hours (incl drone and photo moments). Wasnt a race but cant help my competitive spirit so overtook many and only let one young handsome guy pass me 😇. Got the nickname Speedy Gonzalez by some fellow hikers :). At the end of the trail, most hikers went back to Reyckjavic by bus, left me quite alone here in Basar. Tomorrow will be my toughest day: the steep fimmvörðuháls trail in one go. Will take me around 10 hours prob. And some rain predicted. Fingers crossed all will go well again..

This morning when I woke up, I really doubted if I should do the longer hike to Skogar. Super foggy and no map, no compass, no gps, hardly any battery on my phone left (already 4 days without electricity and my 2 powerbanks were empty). But no risk no life so quickly packed my tent and started the trail. Got almost lost once but returned wisely to the last pole I had seen and waited for other people to arrive with gps. Lots of steep climbs in foggy weather but all went well. I followed a boring jeep trail going down and already thought I wouldnt recommend this hike. But then I crossed a bridge and after that the whole scenery changed. I turned a corner and suddenly I saw the first giant waterfall, wowowow. I didnt expect that! After this first fall, the water falls kept becoming even more dramatic. The photos not even do justice. This week was already perfect but this extra present made it even better! Now at the end of the trail, lots of tourists so back in the normal world. Set up my tent and immediately headed to the restaurant with normal food (not again the dried pasta) and electricity to charge my phone and powerbanks! Tmrw busride back to Reyckjavic. Friday flying home to my poor daughter who got Corona on her girls holiday to Croatia and couldn't join Koeno and family to France... Sunday starts a new kayak adventure with Michel in Denmark 😁. Never a dull moment 😇
